UFSC Araranguá: 10 years – history and challenges

The Araranguá Campus was created in November 2008, based on Resolution 027 / CUn / 2008. In August 2009 the first course began its classes at UFSC Araranguá: Information and Communication Technologies. Graduation was a pioneer, bringing a course that met the market demands of the region.

The second course of the Campus came already the following year and the month of March 2010 marked the beginning of the classes of Energy Engineering. Later that year, the second phase of the first UFSC building in Araranguá, in the Mato Alto, was completed, increasing the physical space and bringing the perspective of installing new courses.

The expansion of UFSC Araranguá happened in a fast way, accompanying the development of the city, and in March 2011, two new courses began their activities at the Mato Alto Unit: Computer Engineering and Physiotherapy.

In addition to the undergraduate courses, from June 2014, with the creation of the Master in Information and Communication Technologies, UFSC Araranguá began its postgraduate course, which continued with the creation of three new programs in the sequence: Master Professional in Teaching Physics, Master in Energy and Sustainability and Master in Rehabilitation Sciences.

With the increasing number of students, faculty, and technical-administrative staff, the building in the Mato Alto neighborhood no longer met Campus demand, so it was necessary to start an expansion project, and UFSC Araranguá started to have activities also in the Jardim das Avenidas.

The activities of the University remain integrated between the two units, but aiming at the best use of the structures, the activities were organized as follows: Jardim Avenues Unit started to host undergraduate courses and administrative units, while Mato Alto Unit houses postgraduates and some research laboratories.

The year 2018 was responsible for bringing a new milestone to UFSC and the entire community of Araranguá and region. During the 2018.2 semester began the activities of the Medicine Course at UFSC Araranguá, consolidating the University in the region and performing a dream of many years of the entire southern community of Santa Catarina.

Now, ten years after its installation, UFSC Campus Araranguá is proud to house the Science, Technology and Health Center, which has five Undergraduate courses, four Postgraduate courses, approximately one thousand and three hundred students, almost 150 servers and generates around 30 indirect jobs.
